MS/HS Ideas

Here is where I will post anything and everything that I know the tweens and above will fancy! It's all about enticing the kids through the door, and then keeping them coming back! PROMOTE, promote, promote!

TWITTER it!

Create a school hashtag like #Bulldogsread or something that connects to your school! Anything and everything social media is what the kids are all about. You can hit up the other popular apps like Instagram and Facebook, too. And, all of them can serve as inspiration for eye-appealing bulletin boards and displays in your library!

Speaking of social media, all librarians need to hit up PINTEREST! Just a little searching, and you will find some crazy creative book display ideas that will make kids want to check those books out! I happen to have a lot of pins so far on my When I'm A Librarian board :) I've included a few of my favorite displays I've found on Pinterest!
Our MS/HS male teachers participate in No Shave November, so this would be a really fun display :)

Easy to color coordinate books--I love this idea!

We often have big readers who need creative ideas in helping them select books!

BOOK CLUBS!
Host book clubs at lunch, before and after school. For some of our students, the library is a safe and accepting place for them. I know sometimes it's hard to have multiple copies of books, but there are ways around that.  Our public library does a fabulous job of sharing multiple copies of books just for that purpose. As well, kids will download books on their phones and I-pads.

Our public library also works with us on a One Book, One School program, where our entire middle school reads the same book! And, then...they bring the author to us!!!! We have had Gordon Korman and Jack Gantos come for a school-wide assembly during the last two years.

Our MS has also had Battle of the Books, or a version of it, where one ELA teacher has a lunch group of students read the classics and then answer trivia type questions. It would be easy for the library to piggy-back onto this!

BEST BOOKS
I have visited five different MS/HS libraries this past year, and all of them have an Evergreen Teen Book Award books display. Most of them include the nominees for this year, but two of the schools I visited also had a section of the nominees from past years. I have never read one of the nominated books and not thoroughly enjoyed it! Easy to promote books that TEENS themselves choose as the best!

TAG
Create a Teen Advisory Group (TAG). I definitely believe in tapping into your resources, especially our kids. I like the idea of giving them the opportunity to make displays, or help with tech and spiffying up the website.

FAMOUS PEEPS
I love the Read On Wisconsin program, where they grab college athletes (part of the Badgers Give Back program) and use them in their posters to show them reading. We could have a campaign to try to do that with some of our local leaders in our community, and possibly even some of our HS athletes. We have a high school athlete who has actually been the STATE athlete of the week in two different sports this year! And, she happens to be one of THE most avid readers I know.

Book Trailers--
We don't have book trailers available in our school, but our yearbook classes make really great weekly movies for our school, and it would be easy to make student-made book trailers happen. We do currently have ELA book projects often displayed in the library.

VISIT! Don't reinvent the wheel...
I like visiting other HS libraries, and on a recent visit I saw some great ideas to promote reading to high school students. I liked how the librarian had genre stickers to guide kids. She also use school colors (orange and black) as signage to grab the reader's attention. Think about heading to a public library and see what they are doing in their young adult section of the library!

I like how she simply writes the author's name,
but it catches your eye easily and quickly!

Kids are crazy about series, so great idea to set those out and about.
