Elementary Ideas

Even though my focus is MS/HS, I have run across some awesome reading promotional ideas for the wee tykes! And, there are even some things that have been happening for ages--those tried and true activities from when I was in school (dinosaur age) or when my grown children were ;)

Some of these ideas may not be able to happen for some places, but use them to spark your imagination!! Maybe you don't have a Pizza Hut, but you do have a local restaurant that would be willing to donate a coupon or even something for a top reader!

Pizza Hut's Book-It has been around for 32 years! Really such a simple idea of hooking up kids with one of their favorite foods by making reading one of their favorite things to do!

The Book-It people and Education World teamed up and have a CREATIVE LIST of 25 Ideas for promoting reading from twenty-five different teachers! My two favorites are Mystery Readers and Readers of Tomorrow. I feel like many of these activities could be adapted easily to MS, and some even for HS.

In our area our local Masonic Lodge sponsors the Bike for Books challenge and awards two top readers at our elementary school a brand new bike!

Scholastic Book Fairs and Book Club are tons of fun and allow for students to purchase books inexpensively, and the sales generate free books for the library or teacher. This can be offered at MS/HS, but are more common at the elementary level!

This is one of seniors reading to a second grade classroom :)

Check out those crazy socks for Fox in the Socks Day!

Read Across America Day--Celebrate Dr. Seuss's bday!!!! Every year my National Honor Society HS students go and spend the day promoting reading with our elementary students. This is a favorite day of the year for ALL kids involved. Try and connect with teachers at different buildings in your district! It doesn't just have to happen on a special day, maybe you start a Buddy Reading program to happen once a month?

Summer Reading Programs
Be sure to connect with the local public libraries and bookstores in your area for any summer reading  programs they might have going! If none exist, CREATE your own :)
